#JCCGivesBack on #GivingTuesday

Date: Tuesday, November 29, 2016

In celebration of #GivingTuesday, the global day of giving that encourages philanthropy and generosity worldwide, the JCC East Bay is launching a two-week campaign titled #JCCGivesBack, calling on community members of all ages to join an East Bay-wide volunteer initiative led by local children and parents.

To kick off festivities on November 29, JCC East Bay will run an array of volunteer activities at its Preschool in Berkeley and each of its Afterschool sites: Berkeley, Oakland, Joaquin Miller Elementary, and Cleveland Elementary (see project details below). The two-week marathon of generosity will culminate on Sunday, December 11 with the JCC East Bay’s Hanukkah Art and Service Fair, where participants will explore service opportunities from inspiring organizations within the East Bay Jewish community.

Those who are interested in joining JCC East Bay’s #GivingTuesday initiative can follow us on Facebook for updates on volunteer projects and getting involved. For more details about the #GivingTuesday movement, visit the #GivingTuesday website

JCC Community-Wide Projects

Book Drive for Jewish Coalition for Literacy

The JCC is excited to be hosting a book drive in partnership with the Jewish Coalition for Literacy at the Berkeley Branch from November 29-December 14. The Jewish Coalition for Literacy offers free one-on-one reading tutoring to kids, parenting workshops, and donates high quality reading books to families in need.

All collected books will be donated to 22 public schools across the East Bay children to children in grades PreK-3. We encourage our community to take a look at JCL's Amazon Wish List. We welcome new and gently used books that meet the following criteria:

  • Books for children ages 4-10/grades PreK-3
  • Multicultural or bilingual books highly desirable
  • No baby, teen, or adult books
  • No PJ Library Books
  • Books should be of universal appeal

Thank you to our local bookstore partners for supporting this project! Each store has JCC East Bay donation bins out from November 29-December 14. Please shop local and support these sellers!

Pegasus Books is offering 20% of all books that are purchased for donation at its three East Bay locations (Downtown Berkeley, Solano, and Oakland).

Books Inc located at 1491 Shattuck in Berkeley has books on JCL's Wish List in stock!

Holiday Card Making for Homebound Seniors

The Berkeley Branch will be hosting a holiday card making table in the lobby in partnership with Meals on Wheels of Alameda County. Meals on Wheels supports and serves hot meals to over 2,000 homebound seniors daily. Join us in the lobby to make a handmade card on November 29 and at the Hanukkah Art & Service Fair on December 11!

JCC Program Projects

On Giving Tuesday, each JCC program will be engaging in conversation about the importance of giving back to the community. Our children will be learning about topics ranging from food justice, to protecting the environment, to homelessness in our community. Each program has designed its own giving project that reflects its passions and areas of interest.

Kids Club at Joaquin Miller

Kids Club Joaquin Miller will host a coat and shoe drive for CityTeam Oakland to support local individuals and families struggling with poverty, homelessness, and addiction. With winter around the corner, we want to help keep our community warm. Winter coats for men, women, and children and shoes for men (size 8-12) and women (size 6-9) will be collected to support our local community.

Kids Club at Cleveland Elementary

Kids Club Cleveland will host a blanket drive for the Sioux Native American tribe at Standing Rock (ND). The blankets will be collected and delivered to Camp of the Sacred Stones, to help keep families warm during the winter season. Children at Kids Club will also spend time learning about our planet's natural resources and the need for cleaner energy sources to maintain the beauty of North Dakota’s plains and Sioux Nation culture.

JCC Oakland Afterschool

JCC Oakland Afterschool will be holding a community art supplies drive and making coloring books for children in Oakland Children's Hospital. Oakland students enjoy expressing their creativity through art and this project will allow them to bring that same joy to children at the hospital.

JCC Berkeley Afterschool

JCC Berkeley Afterschool will be assembling care packages to be delivered to Berkeley Food and Housing Project, a local homeless shelter that provides emergency food and shelter, transitional housing, permanent housing, and housing placement with support services to homeless individuals and families. Berkeley students will make handmade holiday cards to include in each of the packages.

JCC Preschool

The children of JCC Preschool will be doing a school wide food drive to support the Alameda Food Bank. The drive will be linked to the food grown in the Preschool garden, foods that help people grow and flourish, the needs of our friends who we don't know but care for.
