Join JCC East Bay for a Book Talk with Joshua Safran, author of Free Spirit: Growing Up on the Road and Off the Grid.
Raised by his mother, Berkeley attorney and author Joshua Safran spent the 1970s and 1980s in communes, cabins, and the occasional bus. He didn’t regularly attend school until he was 11, where his bucolic upbringing made him a target for bullies. As he aged, Safran recognized that education was his way out—and that he could confront the alcoholic ex-Salvadoran revolutionary step-father who beat Safran’s mother. Publisher’s Weekly rates Safran’s debut as deserving of "exceptional merit" and “reminiscent of David Sedaris’s and Augusten Burroughs’s best work: introspective, hilarious, and heartbreaking.”
