The Afterschool Oakand Program
Oakland Afterschool is located at our Oakland Branch at 5811 Racine Street, in the Temescal neighborhood. The program serves children grades TK-5 from the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), South Berkeley Unified Schools, and Francophone Charter School. With colorful, spacious indoor and outdoor space, plus a large park around the corner, there is plenty of room to relax, do homework, hang with friends, run around, and gain enriching skills. In addition to our core activities, group programming, celebrations, structured and unstructured play, there is a wide array of engaging chugim (Hebrew for “classes or activities”, singular activity is “chug”). We offer seasonal schedules of chugim for Fall, Winter and Spring. Our chugim include activities such as Piano, Women in the Arts, Slime Time, Carribean Cooking, Taekwondo, Roleplaying Adventures (Dungeons and Dragons), STEM Fundamentals with Legos, Dodgeball Showdown, Comic Book Illustrations, The Great JCC Baking Club, and many more! To see examples of our previous seasonal chugim schedules and daily routine schedule, please browse the links below.
Hours: The program runs from 1-6 PM, Monday through Friday. Full-day programming is offered on most Oakland Unified School District holidays and vacations. Our office is open 10am-6pm, Monday through Friday.
Chugim (Enrichment Classes)
The JCC Afterschool Oakland program offers many chugim (enrichment classes) for our winter session to children who are currently enrolled in the Afterschool Programs. We offer a wide scope of chugim from cooking and baking classes, to painting and sculpture classes, to clowning and martial arts, ice skating, swimming, and more! Many of our classes are taught internally by our afterschool teachers and some are contracted out to professionals in the community – cost varies dependent on material fees and instructor. With such a variety of chugim, there is something for everyone!

We partner with 11 local schools to provide van transportation services to the JCC Oakland Afterschool Program. JCC drivers are trained to drive children safely by using defensive driving strategies and abide by California Highway Patrol requirements. All passengers are required to wear seat belts and use appropriate booster seats based on California State Law. We offer transportation from the following schools in Oakland and Berkeley:
Chabot Elementary, Glenview Elementary, Manzanita SEED Elementary, Montclair Elementary, *Peralta Elementary*, Thornhill Elementary, Sequoia Elementary
Emerson Elementary, Malcolm X Elementary, Sylvia Mendez Elementary
Additional Non-District Schools
Francophone Charter School
*This is the only “walking school” because it is within walking distance to our Oakland Branch. Children from Peralta elementary walk to our program with the supervision and guidance of a JCC staff member.*
If you do not see your child’s school on this list, contact the director for additional information: email@example.com.
