All About Studio J
An exciting program for teens and tweens who love the arts. Discover, follow, and further your passions with hands-on classes led by inspiring Bay auteurs. Classes guide participants through all phases of their craft while building community with fellow artists and one another. Bring your creativity and get ready to be inspired. 

Classes are held at the JCC East Bay, Berkeley Branch and include a light vegetarian meal.

Mindfulness and Movement: Master Your Self-Care with Hayden Sims - 5 classes
Grades 5–10
THU, FEB 21–MAR 21, 6–8 PM
Cost: $125

If you can move, you can groove! This course is for students who love movement, diverse music, and soul-invigorating celebration, involving movement modalities such as yoga, contact improvisation (partner dance), and solo dancing. We will gather with the intention to create a safe space for our community to share the bliss of great music, good company, and dance as medicine. 


Smartphone Photography & Social Media Optimization with Katrina Lee - 5 classes
Grades 5–10
SUN, 4–6 PM
Session 2: FEB 24–MAR 24
Cost: $150 per session

Join photographer and digital marketing expert Katrina Lee to learn mobile photography techniques for amazing photos you won’t believe came from your phone. This class will go beyond basic settings, and provide instruction on how to sync, save, and share your work with others. 


Street Art, Featuring the Illuminaries - 5 classes
Grades 5–10
SUN, 1–3 PM
Session 2: FEB 24–MAR 24
Cost: $200 per session

Renowned street muralists Eric Nodra and Tim Hon, the Illuminaries, will walk students through a brief history of street art, and introduce essential basic principles and painting techniques, culminating in the design and painting of a collaborative mural at the JCC. 


Kosher Soul Food for Teens with Miriam Ferris - 5 classes

Session 3: APR 24–MAY 22
Cost: $125 per session

Express your passion for cooking and broaden your palate. Learn about kosher cooking and the rich traditions of Jewish culinary arts. Sharing the joy of food is important, and everyone is invited to come and be inspired. 


Festival or Fantasy: DIY Mermaid Crown and Wing-Making Workshop with Heather Ware - 1 class only
Grades 5–10
THU, FEB 28, 6–9 PM
Cost: $75

Are you in love with the gorgeous seashell mermaid crowns and ethereal fairy wings you see on Instagram? Finding the one that expresses your inner beauty is as hard as finding a unicorn, so make your own! This workshop will be a fun way to plan for Purim or a beautiful fantasy photoshoot. 


Zine and Be Heard with Yael Levy - 5 classes
Grades 5–10
THU, MAR 28–APR 25, 6–8 PM
Cost: $150

This class will take students through the process of composing their own visual narrative and a “mini zine.” Students will be introduced to fundamental principles of visual storytelling, layout, and mini book design and will leave this class with their own limited-edition creations. 


Teen Drama Troupe: Acts of Justice with Ilan Vitemberg - 9 classes
Grades 9–12
THU, APR 11–JUN 6, 7–9 PM
Cost: $250

Join a group of teens to create a unique performance piece based on the stories of refugees from around the world. Students will interview refugees and then translate their stories into movement and improvisation, culminating in a high-impact performance.

JCC East Bay (“JCCEB”) reserves the right to cancel programs that do not meet minimum enrollment one week prior to the scheduled start date. In the event of instructor illness, JCCEB will strive to provide a suitable substitute teacher. If a class must be canceled, JCCEB will attempt to reschedule the cancelled class. If it is not possible to reschedule the class, a pro-rated refund will be issued for any class(es) canceled by JCCEB. Students may not transfer between programs. Missed classes can not be made-up. Refunds are not available for missed classes.
