Awakening Joy

The principles of this 10-month course are universal, though much of material will include Buddhist philosophy drawn from instructor James Baraz's 28 years as a Buddhist meditation teacher and founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center information (www.spiritrock.org). Current cutting edge brain shows that we actually change our brain structure as we practice certain states of mind. The more we incline the mind toward wholesome states of well-being, the more available they are to us. Participants can do the course live at the JCC of the East Bay or by email. Those who do it by email are connected with a cyberspace buddy. During the live gatherings we will have many exercises in dyads, triads and small groups, guest speakers and guided practices.

Last Tuesday each month, January 30-November 27, 7:00-9:30pm
Fee: $25/month or $250 for the series. No one turned away because of finances.

Learn the Doumbek – A Traditional Middle Eastern Drum

A 2-hour weekly class sure to bring out the percussionist in you! Ozzy has extensive experience working with students of all levels and abilities; the low-pressure environment focuses on providing personal attention, while maintaining the fun of a group setting. Drums provided, beginners welcome! Instructor Ozzy Ashkenazi, professional doumbek instructor and performer.

Eastern European Singing

Discover your Balkan singing voice! This series will focus on exploring and de-mystifying Eastern European singing. Come learn about this rich folk singing tradition through simple, easy to follow methods. We’ll practice open voice singing, simple ornamentation, non-western modal styling, and pronunciation tricks to negotiate the languages. Instructor Briget Boyle is a singer with the internationally acclaimed Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble, and Assistant Director of the Jewish Music Festival.

Computer Crime Awareness Online Child Exploitation with Officer Steve DeWarns

Get a glimpse into the “Dark side of the Internet” and see first hand how our children are being solicited for sex online. Learn about the growing crime trends on the Internet while we show you how to protect yourself and your children. This presentation is for parents of children who are active online. The first half hour of the PowerPoint presentation will take you through the various types of crimes committed online as well as real life examples. We then show an online demonstration of what happens to children in chat rooms as well as Social Networking sites, such as Myspace.com. At the conclusion of the presentation, the audience will have the opportunity for questions and answers.

Officer Steve DeWarns has 16 years of law enforcement experience. Ten of those years, he was assigned as the Juvenile Detective.
