Afterschool Programs

CHUGIM AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS

During the school year, children (with the help of parents) may choose special enrichment workshops (Chugim ) that run 8-11 weeks. Chugim are structured classes taught by local professional or specialists from the OY staff and may incoporate Jewish themes. In the past, favorite Chugim have included ice skating, gymnastics, cooking, carpentry, jewelry making, ceramics, music, drama, dance, science, karate, and swimming. Chugim may incur fees that cover the costs of each workshop.
We offer a balance of more structured and less structured activities during the Chugim time slots. The less structured activities include Open recreation, Open Art, Open Study (a counselor is available to assist with homework), and Hangin' Out time.
On Fridays, the OY staff designs special programs around Jewish themes (e.g Tikkum Olam-Repair of the World, Holidays, Jewish Folklore) or timely community events (e.g Earth Day, Community Service Week, International Women's Day, African American History Month and our quarterly Birthday Bash). The Friday programs conclude with a celebration welcoming the Shabbat (Sabbath).

PROGRAMS FOR KINDERGARTNERS

Olam Yeladim offers special programs to meet the unique developmental and scheduling needs of our kindergartners. We offer an early session (11:30-3:00pm, before the older children arrive) for those children who attend morning kindgergarten. In addition, we offer an AM program (8:00-11:30am) for kindergartners who attend school in the afternoon. There must be a minimum of 5 children enrolled in the AM program. Van transportation is available to take AM kindergartners to the eligible schools in the afternoon.

PROGRAMS FOR THE OLDER CHILD (Grades 4-5)

Older children need a balance of freedom combined with special group programs and guidance. In the past, we have offered opportunities to beome a T.A. (Teachers Assistant) assisting counselors, special projects and adventure chugim, and a monthly 'Kids Night Out' with dinner and activities. This year, we are expanding the upper grades and preteen program to include a Teen Lounge and enhanced activities for this unique age group.
