What happens at Camp Tzofim?

JCC Camp Tzofim- ACA accredited camp!

About Us

JCC Camp Tzofim offers an intimate, traditional camp experience where a kid can really be a kid all summer long. Through our age-specific camp activities, campers are able to discover new interests, test personal limits, and most importantly - HAVE FUN! In this exciting and safe environment, campers will celebrate Jewish traditions, make new friends, and develop meaningful relationships with their counselors. Our 5th-6th and 7th-9th graders participate in the Trip and Travel program, a week of fun at camp and fieldtrips around the East Bay, followed by a week of camping and adventure around California.

JCC Camp Tzofim begins at 9:00am and ends at 4:00pm, Monday-Friday. Extended-care is available from 8:00-9:00am and from 4:00-6:00pm for an additional fee at both Camp Tzofim and Berkeley branch locations.

Safety, Supervision, and Authorized Pick-ups

At JCC Camp Tzofim, your child’s safety is always our number one concern. That’s why we have taken the time to continue improving our safety, supervision, and authorized pick up procedures. To learn more about our safety procedures, including upcoming changes and improvements, please contact our Camp Director, Danny Stein.

We believe that summer camp is about having a counselor our campers can trust, and depend on to keep the fun happening. To ensure that our campers have an opportunity to bond with their counselors and to uphold the highest quality of safety in our supervision, our counselor-to-camper ratio is 1:6 for entering kindergarteners; 1:7 for entering grades 1-2 and 1:8 for entering grades 3 – 9.

Transportation

Transportation is provided to campers from the Berkeley Branch of the JCC (1414 Walnut) up to JCC Camp Tzofim's location in Oakland. The bus leaves at 8:45am and returns between 4:15-4:30pm each day. If your child is not in morning care, please wait with your child until the bus driver can open the doors for children to sit on the bus, typically a few minutes before we leave.

Transportation to day use sites, overnights, swimming and field trips is on rented buses, mini-vans or in the JCC owned 15-passenger California Highway Patrol (CHP) certified vans. Drivers with Class B certification drive campers to their destinations. Transportation to and from the JCC East Bay's Berkeley branch to Camp Tzofim will be provided, at no extra cost.

Swimming

What would camp be without going to the pool? Nothing says summer like the smell of chlorine and sunscreen! That is why we are excited to announce that we will be spending lots of time at Mills College’s Trefethen Aquatic Center. They will be providing swim lessons for campers in Rishonim and Sabra, and unstructured (closely monitored) free swim for all age groups.

Traditional, good old fashioned summer camp fun!

Remember all the great kid things you did when you were at summer camp? In our changing world, we think those experiences are more important than ever! At JCC Camp Tzofim, there’s going to be lots of swimming, Ga-ga (Israeli dodgeball) and Kumzits (all-camp sing-a-longs). Life long connections are easily made in the relaxed atmosphere a traditional summer camp provides. Our goal is to allow our campers to develop the many skills needed to be successful in the real world. We use our many years of experience in leadership and team building training to help form our campers into mensches (upstanding people).

The Intersection of Judaism, Nature, and Fun!

Camp Tzofim aims to give campers a sense of Judaism in a whole new way. Our kids experience and celebrate values of Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) through service projects, song, art, dance, and drama. Our Shabbat program on Friday ends the week on a joyous note, celebrating our community by bringing all campers together to experience Jewish culture and history. We also invite our families to join in and celebrate Shabbat with us.

We believe that hanging out in nature is a must. At JCC Camp Tzofim we bring together traditional Jewish values of respecting the earth with modern day practices of zero impact camping and nature games. We love taking advantage of our beautiful Montclair location- conveniently located near Joaquin Miller, Roberts, and Tilden Regional Parks!

Using imagination and developing creativity (as if we had to teach this):

Camp has always had a magical aspect to it. We offer the ability to turn a paper bag into an owl, a well-worn nature trail into a daring adventure into the wild and a third grader into a rock star. Our arts and crafts, music and nature specialists are here to help turn the ordinary into the extraordinary and bring a sense of adventure into the everyday.

What does it mean to be an ACA Camp?

JCC Camp Tzofim is proud to be an official ACA Accredited Camp! The American Camp Association (ACA) Accreditation process means that JCC Camp Tzofim voluntarily submitted to a thorough (up to 300 standards) review of its operation- from staff qualifications and trainings, to health and safety policy reviews, to emergency management. Visit acacamps.org for more information.

Meet the Camp Director

Danny SteinDanny Stein, Camp Director

Danny Stein (born and raised in San Diego, CA) is excited to be spending his fourth summer at JCC Camp Tzofim! He spent his entire life at the Lawrence Family JCC in San Diego, attending camp, participating in theater, and hiding in empty offices. Not only was the JCC a place where he spent all of his time as a kid, but a second home (this will be his 24th summer at a JCC Camp!). There was no doubt in his mind that once he graduated from UC Santa Cruz that he wanted to work at a Jewish Community Center. Danny has brought his love for camp and the Jewish community to the JCC of the East Bay, and is proud to call Camp Tzofim home! Danny is looking forward to another amazing summer of kumzits, adventures, and more fun at JCC Camp Tzofim.
