Masha Gessen in Conversation with Orville Schell

The relationship between Russia and the West is one of the most fraught geopolitical issues of our time -- and growing more complicated every day. Many who assumed this was now safely ensconced in history books find themselves shocked to ask: Are we headed toward a new Cold War?

Russian-American journalist and regular New York Times contributor Masha Gessen (The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia) is widely considered one of the clearest, bravest experts in totalitarianism today. Join her, in conversation with Orville Schell (former professor and dean at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and author of Wealth and Power), for a no-holds-barred look at the state of protest, free speech, and human rights in the world powers that pose the greatest challenges to liberal democracy.

This event will take place on the Alta Stage at Freight & Salvage.
