Jay Michaelson works in two fields: as a weekly columnist for The Daily Beast and The Forward, he is part of the nationwide effort to resist the erosion of our democratic ideals. And as a meditation teacher and rabbi, he is committed to teaching transformative practices of happiness. In this special event, Jay will share both perspectives: an insider's look from the front lines of a new political era, and an look inside at how to fully engage without being consumed by rage, hopelessness, or fear.
Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson is a columnist for The Daily Beast and The Jewish Daily Forward newspapers, and a meditation teacher in Buddhist, Jewish, and secular mindfulness contexts. He is the author of six books, most recently The Gate of Tears: Sadness and the Spiritual Path and the landmark report on the religious exemptions movement, Redefining Religious Liberty: The Covert Campaign Against Civil Rights. Currently an affiliated assistant professor at Chicago Theological Seminary, Jay holds a Ph.D in Jewish Thought from Hebrew University, a JD from Yale Law School, and nondenominational rabbinic ordination. He was a professional LGBT activist for ten years, and the author of God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality, a Lambda Literary Award finalist and Amazon bestseller. Based in New York, Jay now divides his time evenly between writing and teaching.
Copies of The Gate of Tears: Sadness and the Spiritual Path will be available for sale and signing. No credit cards, please.
