Presented with Artists-in-Residence: Book of J (Jewlia Eisenberg & Jeremiah Lockwood)

Did you know that each Jewish month – marked by the new moon – has its own mythology, including Zodiac sign, special color and sensory input? New Moon Gather is a chance to celebrate the new month in a welcoming context, rich with learning and music. April 9 brings Nisan, and themes of exodus celebrated during Passover. Book of J (Jewlia EIsenberg of Charming Hostess and Jeremiah Lockwood of Sway Machinery) will teach and perform songs of Passover, diaspora and justice. We open with tea, cake and text study, we close with a ritual outside under the dark sky of the new moon.  A great way to bring in the new month with joy and intention!

Jewlia Eisenberg works at the intersection of voice, text and diaspora consciousness, often with her ensemble Charming Hostess. She has released four CDs on Tzadik’s Radical Jewish Culture series including Sarajevo Blues, which sets Bosnian resistance poetry, and Trilectic, a look at the political-erotic world of Walter Benjamin.
As a young man, Jeremiah Lockwood apprenticed with blues legend Carolina Slim and simultaneously studied and performed with his grandfather, Cantor Jacob Konigsberg. His band, The Sway Machinery, has performed around the world, perhaps most notably at the Festival au Desert in Timbuktu, Mali.
