‘Wherefore could not I say ‘Amen’?’ – Balaam and Moses

Balaam is the foreign prophet whose narrative takes place in a foreign country. Why is thisnarrative included in the Israelite wilderness history? How are Balaam’s curses and blessings relevant to Israel’s experience? And to our experience as readers? Midrashic and psychoanalytic insights will enrich our exploration.

Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg is one of our world’s premiere teachers of Torah, examining the text through her refined lens of literary analysis. She is the award-winning author of The Murmuring Deep: Reflections on the Biblical Unconscious, Genesis: The Beginning of Desire, and The Particulars of Rapture: Reflections on Exodus. She will be visiting the JCC East Bay on her world tour. Zornberg holds a BA and PhD in English Literature from Cambridge University and teaches Torah in Jerusalem at Matan, Yakar, Pardes and the Jerusalem College for Adults.
